So this week I’m working on creating a 2012 calendar for Kenya Aid. A little something we can sell over Christmas to help us raise the money we need to buy the community an ambulance. And it’s also a nice reminder to our donors to donate each month!
Anyway, while I was trying to decide whether we go down the photographic or the typographic route I came across a bunch of kanga sayings. These are the Swahili pearls of wisdom that adorn the colourful wraps women wear in Kenya. Old African wives tales, if you will.
Some of them are absolutely hilarious. My favourite has to be ‘The day a monkey is destined to die, all the trees get slippery’. Many are about love, such as ‘Don’t abandon your old rug for a passing mat’, and some are just plain beautiful, like the one below. I have to say it’s my favourite and calendar or not, I think we’ll find a use for it. Maybe as a gift card?
