Between wake and sleep

I’ve decided I like betweens. The ‘almost’ parts of life, where you’re right on the brink of possibility and chance. Like that moment when you’re drifting somewhere between wake and sleep – you know you’re awake, but in some entirely different reality where angels touch your soul and make your mind soar. Or the almost possibility of a first kiss landing in its innocence between your lips and cheek and lingering for just a moment. So delightfully full of promise.

It’s these inbetween moments in life that really make up the whole. While we’re busy waiting for the next big thing – a holiday, a promotion, a wedding – it’s all too easy to miss our real lives in passing. Sepia moments, lost in the labyrinth of time but captured in a second if only we would care. This isn’t something new, our bustling past these moments is not something we’re unaware of. But it’s certainly something we seem to forget in the rush of modern life. The ability to take time, to make time. In a digital age it’s all too easy to click through frames. Click. Do I look good. No. Delete.

This ability to edit our lives is remarkable. We seem to be afraid of the bad, the sour, the depressing. We want to achieve, we want to be happy, and in the sad struggle to ‘have it all’ we’ve forgotten how to be human. We’re not sure what to do with our anger, and we’re no longer okay with lonely. We skim past the everyday and centre our lives around the feel good big things that we believe define our lives. Not to take credit away from all these achievements, but everything in perspective. Life just is. It’s time to start living and remembering the moments in between.
